Loosely based on Las tres mujeres en una by Fray Alonso Remón, and thought to be written in 1621-22 near the start of his fruitful, so-called “Madrid Years”, La Celosa de sí misma is one of Tirso’s lesser known plays, though certainly not his weakest. Heavily influenced by the Italian Commedia dell’arte, Spain’s Golden Age comedia developed recognisable, codified plot lines and stock characters, but it is Tirso’s remodelling of these tropes that make his theatre so enticing.
